DirectME Field Guide and Best Practices

This is a quick guide on the best practices for in-the-field streaming.

πŸ’‘ Please note that these instructions assume that you have already followed the proper procedures for connecting your cameras to your wireless systems and the wireless system to the Decimator and LiveU.

These instructions also assume you have properly set up, connected to the internet, and powered all devices.

Just in case you need it, here’s instructions on proper set up:

Overview

This is a collection of best practices to ensure that your DirectME stream is successful.

Best Practices

  1. When possible, connect the wireless receiver to the Decimator and then connect the Decimator to the LiveU. Do NOT go straight from the wireless receiver into the LiveU. Doing this may result in streaming issues.
  2. Be sure to connect your LiveU to a power source, either a wall outlet or a D-tap. The device has an onboard battery, but only lasts a few hours.
  3. Whenever possible, try to connect the LiveU to Wifi (or, even better, ethernet). This will supply additional bandwidth to the two cellular modems attached to the encoder.
  4. Keep an eye on the streaming bandwidth. If transmission drops below 1250kbps, your feed might experience streaming issues.
  5. To ensure recorded streams (called β€˜clips’) load as quickly as possible, please stop the stream whenever you take long breaks. Every hour of recorded stream time takes 1 hour to convert into a clip.
  6. For long streams, it is advised to stop the stream every 3 hours. Streams that last longer than 3 hours have an increased rate of failure in converting the recorded stream to a clip.
  7. If broadcasting from a Mac, you may need to enable your camera or HDMI to USB dongle in your system settings. Go to Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy Tab > Camera. Then click the corresponding checkbox next to your camera or streaming device.

That’s it!
